Caring For Your Art

Location, Location, Location.
Although you might adore your sunroom, two major culprits for faded or warped woodwork are extreme temperatures and direct sunlight. So it may be a good idea to find a place that is out of direct sunlight. Other spots to stay away from are next to steamy baths or right above a radiator.

Handle It With Care.
When transporting or moving a piece—whether it’s just to a different room or to an entirely new location—requires a gentle touch. Always pack your turned wood sculptures in soft padding or packing peanuts; something that will not put direct pressure on the delicate parts of the art and try not to jostle them. If something bad happens to your art, don’t ignore it. Contact me directly and I may be able to help repair the damage.

Cleaning Your Art Pieces
Your art may be gently cleaned with a damp or dry, lint free or micro fiber cloth. For even more delicate and detailed cleanings of your turned wooden carved art sculptures may be lightly brushed with a feather duster or compressed air (canned air duster) to remove dust. It is recommended to clean you art twice a year.

When Does Your Turned Wooden Art Sculpture Need Professional Treatment?
1. If prominent cracks appear in the finish or wood. (Very uncommon)
2. The art is dropped, knocked over or has been broken.
3. If your wooden art sculpture has been exposed to water – preferably while it is still wet.

Storage
If you have Art sculptures that are not being displayed, are seasonal or temporarily, they should be stored in appropriate conditions. The climatic conditions in which you turned art sculptures are stored should not be dramatically different from those where the piece will be displayed. The transition between a cold, damp basement or a hot attic to a climatized room could cause warping or cracking of the wood and could be disastrous.

The Guideline For Storing is Airflow.
1. Stored wood turned sculptures should be raised off the floor to allow air-flow and to protect them from water damage.
2. Stored art should be covered or packaged with cotton sheets and not polythene that may cause mold.
3. The use of packing peanuts is a good storage alternative when packing in a box due to the loose fitting and fill properties they allow.
4. Choose interior walls rather than exterior walls for storing your art. They are drier.
5. If you are storing your wood turned hand carved art sculptures for long periods, then we would advise you to examine them periodically for . Sachets of silica gel or desiccant may help protect your hand crafted wood sculptures.
